A bold new production of The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie launches the autumn season at the Royal theatre in Northampton next weekend.
Rediscovering Muriel Spark's classic story of seductive and manipulative power, artistic director Laurie Sansom continues to build the theatre's reputation after recent successes with Follies, Frankenstein and J B Priestley's The Glass Cage.

The scandalously outspoken and charismatic teacher, Miss Brodie, demands utter devotion from her chosen set of girls – the school's crème de la crème – but when her overt sensuality creates bitter rivalries and her passion for all things Italian embraces its fascist politics, she is in danger of destroying herself and those around her. Set in 1930s Edinburgh, the story is told through memories of the women moulded and damaged by her personality.

This will be the first major staging of The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie in England since the National Theatre's 1998 production. Jean Brodie will be played by Anna Francolini, whose performance in the musical Caroline, Or Change at the National Theatre earned her an Olivier Award nomination in 2007. The play also features Northampton School for Girls' choir Madrigalis.

The show runs from September 12 to October 4, and tickets are priced £10.50 to £26.50.Performances are at 7.45pm and matinees at 2.30pm.

For tickets and complete times and listings call the box office on 01604 624811.
