The award-winning Grimethorpe Colliery Band, who catapulted to world-wide recognition through the 1996 hit movie Brassed Off, will make their first ever appearance at Royal & Derngate on Saturday, December 6 at 7.30pm as part of their UK tour.
Since the band's original formation by members of the disbanded Cudworth Colliery Band in 1917, Grimethorpe have been regular competitors in national and international competitions, more often than not taking first prize and never coming lower than fifth in their entire career.

The story of Grimethorpe really came into its own in 1992 when the Government announced the final details of nationwide pit closures just five days before the band was due to take part in the final of the National Brass Band Championships at the Royal Albert Hall.

The pressure was immense, but with a great deal of passion and resolve Grimethorpe triumphed at the contest to become the Champion Brass Band of Great Britain.

In 2004 the band topped the classical music charts with a CD featuring a selection of their most popular numbers, and in both 2006 and 2007 they were once again crowned National Brass Band Champions of Great Britain.

Tickets are priced £16 and £19.50 from the box office on 01604 624811 or online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk.
