Cobblers will learn their fate once and for all on Tuesday when EFL clubs gather for a decisive meeting on how to end - or resume - the 2019/20 season amid the coronavirus outbreak.

After months of discussions, disagreements and delays, clubs will finally be given clarity at Tuesday's EGM where it is expected leagues one and two will be curtailed while the Championship rubber-stamps a restart later this month.

The second tier of English football are returning to play all the remaining games from June 20, subject to health and safety protocols being met, however only the play-offs will take place in League One and League Two.

Cobblers' unlikely shot at promotion was initially revealed over three weeks ago when all 24 League Two clubs agreed to curtail the season but retain promotion, scrap relegation and keep the play-offs in an indicative vote. That is likely to be made official on Tuesday, albeit with relegation reinstated.

Here are some more details about tomorrow's crucial meeting:

When is the vote and who will take part?

The meeting for the vote on proposals to change the EFL regulations, should curtailment of the 2019/20 season be required, will be held on Tuesday, June 9, at 10.30am.

Not all 71 clubs are expected to attend the meeting, which will be held via video conference call. The majority of the clubs are expected to vote by proxy.

What are clubs voting on?

Clubs will vote on a framework to end the season. Some of the proposals put forward come from the EFL board, Tranmere Rovers and Barnsley.

The EFL board's proposal will see tables decided by an unweighted points-per-game model in the event of a curtailment. It suggests promotion and relegation must be retained and the play-offs should go ahead as normal. It will need 51 per cent of the vote in any division.

What are the other proposals and are they likely to be approved?

Tranmere, who would be relegated from League One under PPG, have proposed an alternative method determined by a margin for error. If a season is curtailed, final standings and promotion/relegation will be decided by unweighted PPG but with a 'margin of error' calculation, then applied to produce a 'Final Points Range' (FPR) for each club.

Meanwhile, Barnsley, who are fighting relegation in the Championship, have suggested a general amendment to regulations that would see no club relegated from a division where that division fails to conclude its normal fixtures.

Neither of these proposals - nor any others put forward by clubs - are expected to generate enough to support to pass.

What happens next?

Once the outcome of the vote is known, it will be adopted into EFL regulations and followed by another vote within each division. League Two are certain to curtail and League One will likely follow the same path but the Championship is set to resume in a couple of weeks.

If that is confirmed, Cobblers fans can look forward to their side taking on Cheltenham Town over two legs in the League Two play-off semi-final later this month.
