Jon Brady believes new signing Alex Jones will give the Cobblers an extra spark in attack once he gets up to full match speed.

The 26-year-old signed on a free transfer until the end of the season earlier this week and was straight in the squad for Town's 2-0 win over Plymouth Arygle.

He didn't get off the bench but Brady was pleased to boost his attacking options and hopes Jones can find the form that saw him score nine times in 19 games for Port Vale four years ago.

Cobblers are short of goals this season with just 26 from 32 games, the lowest return in League One.

"At the moment we've got to work with some free transfers," said Brady. "There isn't too much quality out there at the moment and through our contacts and through our recruitment, Alex came up.

"He came in to train with us and he's looked sharp. He's been out of football action for six months so we've got to help him and work with him and get him sharper.

"But he's got an eye for goal, which he showed at Port Vale. He's not been involved for a while but he's worked hard with a personal trainer to get really fit.

"He's been with us in the building for a week and a half so we're trying to work with him and get him sharper."
